What Are Cavities?
Decaying of teeth is known as cavities. The teeth that decay are either your incisors or your molars, premolars. This decay of the teeth may take place either on the crown of the teeth or at the gap between the two teeth. Teeth decay takes place due to improper dental hygiene. So the surest way of avoiding cavities is by maintaining a proper dental hygiene.
If you are over twenty five years of age, and you have not paid special attention to your teeth, then, stand in front of a mirror, the changes are you will find that you have a cavity. You need no special qualifications to identify cavities in your mouth. Take a closer look, you will find that the teeth at the back of your mouth or a bit forward are having some black marks, well these are called cavities. More than 60 % of the population of the United States of America is suffering from dental problems. Of this more than 80 % of them from cavities related to improper care of your teeth. Cavities start out as a small black spot on the crown of your teeth or in the gap between your teeth. They slowly over time eat into your teeth and reach the base of the teeth where it affects the root canal of the teeth. It is generally now that people notice due to the intense pain caused. Till then it has been overlooked due to the not so intense pain.
Large cavities can cause food particles to be trapped in them. This food particles decay there leading to accelerate the process of decay of your teeth.
Another name for dental cavities is dental caries.

Toothache is the most common symptom for dental caries.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Improper care of your teeth leads to tooth decay. Eating a healthy diet rich in fiber and less in starch and sugars gives your teeth a longer life. In addition to a healthy diet, one should take proper care of one’s teeth. This extends the life of your teeth. You are never likely to get a natural replacement after you miss your permanent ones.
Types of Cavities
Cavities are classified into three types depending on the type of decay. If the decay is superficial then it is called Coronal, if it is deeper, then it is called root decay and the third type of decay is recurrent, the description of which is evident from its name. Recurrent decay takes place just below the fillings of your teeth. This is caused due to improper fillings, gap between fillings and non-removal of cavities before filling.
Risk of developing a Cavity
Medically speaking, cavities are developed as a result of improper care of the teeth; however cavities may also result from medications that are being taken for treatment of alternative problems. Cavities may also result from dry mouth, a problem that is associated with no or little saliva in the mouth.
Cavities Treatment options
A good dentist can take care of your cavities. But for prevention it is necessary that you take proper care of your teeth. Cavities can result in migraine headaches starting off with a tooth ache. In extreme cases Cavities can result in loss of hearing and brain related problems.
Can Cavities be prevented?
Cavities can be prevented by following good dental hygiene. Take care to brush your teeth at least twice daily. Floss your teeth everyday and get regular dental checkups done. There are some parts of your teeth that are quite inaccessible by your brush; a dentist will clean them for you if you visit the dentist on a regular basis.
